Buffy Sainte-Marie, Indigenous Canadian-American singer-songwriter, musician, and social activist, performed a concert on campus during “Indian Week” in October 1969. “Indian Week” was organized by Indigenous students to provide campus with opportunities to learn about Native culture and the experiences of Native people. The week-long program included a pow-wow, discussions on religious heritage, speakers on Indian education and Indian welfare, a panel discussion on the ‘Effectiveness of the Bureau of Indian Affairs for Urban and Reservation Indians’, the Buffy Sainte-Marie concert, and a talk by Gerald Vizenor on the Thomas White Hawk criminal case.
